  • WAR <–> CLIMATE COLLAPSE

    WAR <–> CLIMATE COLLAPSE

Earth’s greatest enemy is the US Empire. Watch Abby Martin’s new documentary to understand why: https://earthsgreatestenemy.com/

Genocides and Ecocides are the same thing!

The US military is the world’s biggest polluter!

Chemring Nobel and the rest of the Norwegian weapons industry is deeply interlinked with the US military. Most of what is produced in Norway is exported to the US – the biggest military empire the world has ever seen – spending more on its military than the next ten countries combined.

They kill and oppress people around the world every day, all just to uphold the petrodollar, capitalism and dominance. But how they pollute our environment and climate is often looked past.

The US military is the single largest emitter of greenhouse gases on the planet, spewing carbon, contaminating water, and scarring landscapes across the globe. The primary sources of pollution are jet fuel, manufacturing and the maintenance of almost a thousand military bases globally. The US is the only country that militarily occupies the entire planet.

The US has been instrumental in ensuring military emissions are exempted from international reporting requirement. That means a massive amount of global emissions are not accounted for.

Chemring Nobel also exports a lot of rocket fuel to Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The deranged psychopath’s dildo-spaceship dreams pollute enourmously.

Norway calls the US our closest and most important ally. And Norway is walking the talk. The US Empire has 12 military bases inside Norway (15 in Sápmi). Kongsberg Gruppen, Nammo, GKN, Kitron, Chemring Nobel etc. – these weapons factories know no borders. Within three to five years, the Norwgian war industry could grow to become Norway’s second largest – ahead of aquaculture, but behind fossil fuels.

The Norwegian Oil fund is investing 50% of all its money in the US economy, like the weapons industry, fossil fuels and surveillance etc. It’s time to wake up from the American nightmare.

“We can’t feed the poor, but we can fund a war.” This is capitalism.

How can we passively accept Europe’s largest military-explosives factory being built to fuel the US war machine, in the old growth forest of Hurummarka?

It’s time to recognize the intersectionality of struggles. It’s time for solidarity and total liberation.

We look forward to see more people and the wider climate justice movement actively engaged, side by side, in this essential struggle. Greenpeace, Den grønne studentbevegelsen, Folk mot fossilmakta, Natur og Ungdom, Framtiden i våre hender, Extinction rebellion, Naturvernforbundet, Changemaker, Nordic Climate Justice Coalition etc.

  • Lockheed Martin

    Lockheed Martin

A big part of what Chemring Nobel is (and will be) producing at Hurum is shipped to Lockheed Martin – the largest war company in the history of the world – the most important manufacturer for the US Empire and its atrocities around the globe.

Chemring Nobel, with blessings and funding from the Norwegian state, produces key high-energy explosives (such as RDX and HMX) that are used in the rocket motors and warheads for Lockheed Martin’s Hellfire missilies, which is widely usied in crimes against humanity, including in Palestine.

Lockheed Martin are also the final manufacturer of the F-35 jet. There are currently nine Norwegian weapons companies that are direct suppliers of parts to the F-35 program. Genocidal Israel has 48 of these fighter jets. In 2028, they will have 75.

Norway calls the US its closest and most important ally. And Norway is not only saying it. They’re acting it. The US Empire has 12 military bases inside Norway. Norway’s weapons industry is deeply interlinked with the US military. Kongsberg Gruppen, Nammo, GKN, Kitron, Chemring Nobel etc. These weapons factories know no borders. The Norwegian Oil fund is investing 50% of all its money in the US economy – like the war industry, fossil fuels and surveillance etc.

Lockheed Martin claim that they protect peace and democracy throughout the world. This could not be further from the truth. War is a business. And business is booming. The military industrial complex plays the center role in shaping the US foreign policy.

Since 2001 the US has spent more than 14 trillion dollars on war. Nearly half of that went to private war contractors. Tax payers subsidize the war industry, the war industry hires lobbyists to manipulate politicians to give money to the industry. Then they and their shareholders profit from manufactured wars and genocides.

Norway is actively complicit in their crimes against humanity. It’s time to wake up to that reality. It’s time to wake up from the American nightmare.

So-called “USA”, it’s stolen land! Land back!

(Also, between 1825 and 1924, 800,000 Norwegian immigrants directly participated in the system of settler colonialism that displaced Indigenous populations.)

If war is an industry, how can there be peace in a capitalist world?

All this is why we put our living bodies in the way of the new war factory by Chemring and the Norwegian state.

    Join us in stopping them.

  • “Democracy! Bread and Circus!”

    “Democracy! Bread and Circus!”

🎪🤹  Welcome to the performance “Democracy! Bread and Circus!” directed by the Norwegian Defence States Agency, Chemring and Asker Municipality. All decisions have been made, come in and watch the play Democracy!”

11 May, Tofte Secondary School: What was supposed to be a model for democratic participation and transparent planning from the Norwegian Defence States Agency and Chemring, has turned out to be exactly the opposite: a well-directed mock process. The recently launched planning report and the so-called “People’s Meeting” are nothing more than a play designed to give citizens the illusion of influence, while the decisions have already been made.
It is very gratifying to see that so many of the locals are not fooled by the leather process, but possess a lot of important knowledge and put the Norwegian Defence States Agency to the wall.

How has the Norwegian Defence States Agency reached its conclusions? Have they changed the criteria or were the criteria also decided in advance? We cannot accept that the Norwegian Defence States Agency continues to use “open meetings” as an excuse for a lack of genuine dialogue. A planning process that is not willing to accept criticism and adjust its course is not a planning process, it is a decision-making machine. When Chemring Nobel, Asker municipality, the Norwegian Defence States Agency and the State are united in not allowing the local population to take part in deciding whether there should be an explosives factory at Hurum or not, the local population should take matters into their own hands.

We also invite you to our open meetings in Avgrundsdalen. Boycott or disrupt all of the leather processes set up by the Norwegian Defence States Agency and Asker Municipality, support us in the Avgrunnsdalen Valley and help build up direct democracy and real resistance to the war machine.

  • Biodiversity in Avgrunnsdalen and the area surrounding Chemring’s planned explosives factory

Hurumlandet is very rich in terms of biodiversity, the project area for the explosives factory is no exception.

Chemring Nobel was commissioned by the state to look at various alternatives for locations for the explosives factory; 10 locations were researcheand assessed, with regard to environmental qualities. The investigations were carried out by Norconsult, which assessed the environmental status of each location (link to assessment here). Norconsult is one of Norway’s largest consulting firms and thus an important part of the defense industry’s pursuit of increased profits. This cannot be considered an independent process and looks more like a pseudo-democractic process. All of the proposed locations had environmental qualities of significant regional and national interest.

The assessments of a consulting firm, driven by profit and self-interest, were heard; the government decided to proceed with Hurumlandet. The reasons given were «favorable topographical conditions, proximity to current facilities and access to relevant expertise and infrastructure».

Chemring Nobel itself claims that ecological values should be safeguarded through thorough impact assessments  and dialogue with affected parties. However, the scope of such a production facility is covered by regulations on impact assessments. Thus, it is not a measure they are implementing to safeguard nature, but something Chemring Nobel is obliged to do by law.

We have examined the available existing knowledge on the biodiversity within the planning area of the factory, as well as the surrounding consideration zone, and the list is long. In its entirety, the area has a great many species registrations, about 1000 taxa registered. Including 53 red list species, with a distribution of 2 critically endangered, 7 highly endangered, 19 vulnerable and 25 near threatened (Figure 1). The endangered species are various types of birds, mammals, butterflies, vascular plants, mosses and fungi. Because highly endangered and critically endangered species live in the planning and affected area, it should be assessed as having «very high value», according to Miljødirektoratet’s (the norwegian environment agency) KU guide M-1941.

Figure 1: Registrations of red-listed species within the area of the factory plant, the feasibility study and the consideration zone for Chemring Nobel’s new production plant for high explosives in Hurumlandet. Data for the maps has been obtained from the public database Artskart.no.

Several habitat types, mainly within forest land, of very high and high quality, have also been registered in the area. Habitat mapping should play a central role in safeguarding species diversity, the range of variation and ecological connections in Norwegian nature. The habitat types in the project area and the consideration zone have been assigned a value based on quality (intactness) and red-list status, according to Miljødirektoratet’s (the norwegian environment agency) KU guide. 16 locations have received the highest value score – «very high value», and 62 locations have received the second highest score – «high value». Several of these are located in the area of the factory plant itself (Figure 2).

In the northern part of the area, within the consideration zone and the feasibility study area, is also the Tofte Nature Reserve. The area is protected to preserve an intact forest ecosystem of a large number of thickly grown old spruce forests with a rich flora. There are several special habitat types and red-listed species in this protected area.

Figure 2: Map overview of valued habitat types within the area for the factory site, the feasibility study and the consideration zone for Chemring Nobel’s new production plant for high explosives in Hurumlandet. The value categories are in accordance with the valuation criteria in the Norwegian Environment Agency’s KU guide M-1941. Data on the habitat types are taken from the public database Naturbase: Natur og miljø på kart.

Norconsult assessed the area as a whole as «high value» for biodiversity in its assessments of environmental quality. They themselves mention that there are several areas of high and very high value scattered throughout the landscape, and that many red-listed bird species have been registered. But if one is to follow the Miljødirektoratet’s (the norwegian environment agency) KU guide, as one should in such assessments, then the area should have been assessed at the highest value score – «very high value», due to the habitat types with very high quality and the species with high red list status. The valuation is used to determine the impact of the measure on natural diversity, and the higher the value an area has, the greater the consequence of destruction. The KU guide states that when valuing a larger area, as has been done in Norconsult’s assessments, the area should be assigned the highest registered value. This is therefore a failure in the assessment, which we expect to be corrected in the actual impact assessment for natural diversity that will be carried out in the near future.

How is it to protect nature when there is data and knowledge that is not listened to? If Chemring Nobel and the state really believe that they should safeguard natural values, the answer should be very simple – do not seize the rich natural diversity in Hurumlandet!

At the same time, we stand here in AFS Hurummarka and say: No explosives factory! Not here or anywhere else. Chemring Nobel is closely linked to US imperial wars, the German military which is getting more and more fascist by the day, and the Israeli military which both nations provide weapons to. When we express love for life and diversity here in Norway and  Hurumlandet, we cannot accept destruction and death elsewhere in the country or elsewhere in the world. Chemring’s profit and the state of Norway’s political interests are international, therefore our resistance and solidarity must also be international.

Let’s stand together against Chemring Nobel and the Norwegian state which supports that profit trumps ecological diversity and human life!

  • Good morning from Avgrunnsdalen 🦊🌲

Watch Chemring Group’s propaganda video to understand better what we are up against.

They present themselves as protectors, even a global community. But Chemring is nothing more than actively fueling the global war machine and US imperialism.

Chemring Nobel is 100% owned by British Chemring Group PLC. 90% of Chemring Nobel’s production is exported to other countries, most of it going to the US weapons industry like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and SpaceX, and from the US military directly to the genocidal regime of so-called israel.

In the last weeks, stock prices for major arms-producing companies in the US have all risen drastically, including for Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. Both companies produce the missiles, fighter jets, bombers and radar technology used on killing civilians in Iran.

Each day we spend here in Avgrunnsdalen our hearts are with those who’ve lost their lives or their loved ones and who face the unimaginable horrors of imperial aggression.

    Enough is enough!

With our new squat in Avgrunsdalen we are a stone in the gears of this war machine. Let us work together to stop Norwegian complicity in war and genocide now!

Join our open bonfire tonight to see how we can connect❤️‍🔥 If you want to contribute materially, check our wishlist.
